As expected, ABC has given a series order to Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Here’s the official description: Clark Gregg reprises his role of Agent Phil Coulson from Marvel’s feature films as he assembles a small, highly select group of Agents from the worldwide law-enforcement organization known as S.H.I.E.L.D. Together they investigate the new, the strange, and the unknown across the globe, protecting the ordinary from the extraordinary. Coulson’s team consists of Agent Grant Ward (Brett Dalton), highly trained in combat and espionage, Agent Melinda May (Ming-Na Wen) expert pilot and martial artist, Agent Leo Fitz (Iain De Caestecker); brilliant engineer and Agent Jemma Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge) genius bio-chemist. Joining them on their journey into mystery is new recruit and computer hacker Skye (Chloe Bennet). From Executive Producers Joss Whedon (Marvel’s The Avengers, Buffy the Vampire Slayer); Jed Whedon & Maurissa Tancharoen, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. pilot co-writers (Dollhouse, Dr.Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog); Jeffrey Bell (Angel, Alias); and Jeph Loeb (Smallville, Lost, Heroes) comes Marvel’s first TV series.  Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is produced by ABC Studios and Marvel Television. I genuinely HATE that Jeph Loeb has anything to do with this. I’m sure it will be fun despite him.

Robert Downey Jr. Won’t Be Back for Iron Man 4 But Will Return for The Avengers 2 and 3 $50M is only 3.3% of the total gross of The Avengers. Isn’t your top superstar worth a mere 3.3% to keep box office up? Iron Man & the Marvel Movieverse without RDJ will not see these kinds of figures. At this point, he’s so embedded that he’s irreplaceable. It’s the risk they took when casting such a huge name in such an integral role. Disney needs to throw as much money as it takes to get him to sign on.

“Black said that the long-discussed alcoholism arc ‘Demon in a Bottle’ that’s been rumored as popping up in an Iron Man film just won’t work if you want your hero to have mass appeal.” I call bullshit. Exhibit A: The Dark Knight. It sounds more like either the writers (Shane Black and Drew Pearce) or Disney themselves don’t have the balls to defend a story with serious overtones to the would-be whiners. (You know, the “whitewash everything to protect our children so we don’t have to actually parent” groups.)
